Friday night was the first semblance of “game action” under the lights at the Dyersburg Jamboree. We saw Graham Simpson and his Westview Chargers score 28 points in the 1st quarter in under 15 plays. Westview put out a notice this preseason that they are the favorite in 3A and the road to Chattanooga runs through them. We also saw the debut of Dyer County’s new head man Justin Dubruiel, who’s squad had some good moments in the the 40 minute game. Westview opens their season next Friday against defending State Champs MASE on the campus of UTM and Dyer County will have their annual rivalry game at Dyersburg.

Munford and Crockett County had an exciting 1st quarter with a stretch of 3 touchdowns scored within 5 minutes of gameplay. Plenty of talent on the field in that one. I expect Munford to be a heavy player in 5A. The Cougars open their season Thursday at home vs Memphis Business Academy. Crockett, who will make a run at the 7-4A title this year, opens at home against Memphis Middle College on Friday.

Obion County, sitting out 1,000 yard rusher Tucker Moore and Senior receiver Bryson Underwood, started out hot with a couple quick touchdowns. Brighton answered with 3 straight TDs unanswered to win 21-13. Brighton and OC will both battle for playoffs spots in some hard to predict regions this season. Brighton opens their season Friday night at home vs PURE Academy and the Rebels will be traveling to Lake County for the Battle for Reelfoot.

In the night cap was quite a bit of Dyersburg. Lake County couldn’t get much going, but with only 21 players, will be a tough beat in 7-1A this season under 2nd year head man Hunter Short. I expect to see the Falcons back in the playoffs and wouldn’t be surprised if they won that region. Dyersburg will have a bit tougher challenge to win 7-3A with Westview, but the Trojans will battle with Covington for the 2 spot and a home playoff game.

The players who I thought stood out:

Donteze Joy- Westview- The All State receiver had three 45+yard touchdown receptions.

1 of Donteze Joy’s 3 touchdown receptions.

CD Damron- Westview- Makes plays on both side of the ball, but was the only non Joy touchdown for the Chargers who had a 50+ rush to pay dirt.

Asa Brown- Westview- Who will also be playing both sides of the ball and will get a ton of offers to play running back at the next level had an interception early to kill a long Choctaw drive.

DK Woods- Crockett County- Woods took one to the house from 70 yards out.

Tay Starks- Munford- The Sophomore and Mr. Football Semifinalist last season had himself a 70 yard touchdown rush.

Bricen Turnage- Munford- Opened the scoring with a 50+ yard rushing touchdown.

Derek Argo- Obion Co- Argo had a couple good runs and a TD in limited action.

Cayden Young- Brighton- Led 3 straight drives for touchdowns at quarterback for the Cardinals with a couple nice passes and runs.

Jonathan Matthews- Brighton- Had a TD a couple really nice runs.

Jakarion Burrell- Brighton- Finished the scoring for the Cards with a 12 yd TD.

Quincy Terry- Dyersburg- The Trojans have a stable of running backs that could be mentioned, Peyton Hill being one, but Terry scored the first touchdown of the night.

We’ve finally made it! Week 1 is here and it’s a busy one for the Gridiron Blitz team! We’ll be in Paris on Thursday for Haywood vs Henry County. On Friday, we head to Martin for MASE vs Westview, and then Saturday, we’re heading to Memphis for a Houston and Germantown matchup.
