Week 1 Games of the Week Recap

It's been a busy weekend for the TN Report crew as Week 1 gave us 3 Games of the Week. Thursday night kicked off the season with Henry County hosting Haywood County, Friday night was a matchup of two perennial State Championship contenders with the 3A State Runner Ups, Westview Chargers hosting the defending 1A State Champs and now 2A MASE Phoenix, and finally on Saturday, a battle of Germantown Red Devils hosting the Houston Mustangs in a rivarly matchup.


Haywood Co Tomcats at Henry Co Patriots


The Tomcats and Patriots put on a show to kick off the TSSAA season as Haywood survived a late rally from Henry Co to win 30-28. Haywood's Jaden Butler and Henry Co's Ayden Spellings scored 4 touchdowns a piece and put their respected teams on their backs.

Butler had a 5 yard TD reception with a nice toe tap at the back of the end zone and touchdown runs of 1yd, 13yds, and 14yds.


Spellings had 4 rushing TDs of 2yds, 10yds, 14yds, and 20yds.


Next week: Haywood hosts Covington (1-0 56-21 vs Lakeland Prep) Henry County travels to Giles County (0-1 34-47 vs Page)


MASE Phoenix at Westview Chargers


Friday night, we traveled to the campus of UTM for MASE and Westview. The 1st half was a defensive struggle with plenty of penalties. Westview was finally able to break open the scoreless tie in the 2nd quarter with an Asa Barnes TD and 2 point conversion. After the half, Westview's powerhouse offense eventually took over with a touchdown reception from CD Damron and 3 scores from Miles Brown. The Chargers took out the defending 1A State Champs 34-0.

Other standout players from Friday:

  • Graham Simpson(Westview) went 13-21 for 219 yds and 2 TDs

  • Asa Barnes (Westview) carried the ball 17 times for 117 yds and TD with a forced fumble on defense

  • Kaidence Nelson(MASE) was really the only bright spot offensively for the Phoenix with a couple really nice plays in the first half. Was very solid defensively too.

  • Finn Snider(Westview) 10 tackles and Coree Wells(Westview) 8tackles


Up next: Westview has a bye this week but travels to Marshall County in Week 3. MASE travels to Mississippi to play Senatobia High School


Houston Mustangs at Germantown Red Devils


This one was a real treat. Two huge rivals, a packed house, and a great ball game. Germantown pulled away late to win 44-23. Sophomore QB Jour'din Shelton led the Red Devils at QB throwing the ball 11-17 for 214 yds and 2 TDs. He also had 67 rushing yards and a TD. Houston's QB, Canon Day had a solid night too(17-23 122 yds 2 TDs)

  • Larry Johnson(Germantown) 15 carries 73 yds and a touchdown

  • LaQuan Higginbottom(Germantown) 3 receptions 71 yds and a TD

  • Derreon Rogers(Germantown) 3 receptions 83 yds

  • Brennan Odle(Houston) 40 yd td reception

  • Conner Brown(Houston) 6 tackles and an interception


Up next: Germantown hosts Bartlett (0-1 17-23 vs MUS) and Houston hosts Whitehaven (0-1 6-31 at Ensworth)


Next week is another big week for the Gridiron Blitz crew as we're heading to Jackson on Thursday for JCM at South Side and on Friday for South Gibson at Milan.
